Women are warned not to elevate their core temperature above 39 degrees as it may pose a risk to their unborn baby, so we are advised to avoid saunas, steam rooms and steamy hot baths. But if you are apprehensive, a nice warm bath is perfectly fine.
This will come as welcome news to expectant mums as baths can offer relief from Braxton Hicks, backache and even early labour pains although you should not take a bath if your waters have broken. Thankfully, many bath products, such as bath salts, bath bombs, soaps and bubble baths are perfectly safe during pregnancy. The one product that is often cautioned against is essential oils as some of them, in high concentration, can cause complications.
Lavender is usually to be avoided during the first trimester and only used in small amounts in the second and third. Tea tree oil has been known to cause premature contractions and rosemary oil may raise blood pressure as well as causing contractions. However there are some oils that are perfectly safe so it is always worth consulting your doctor if you would like to use some.
