We and our contractors will be handling install but we already invited everyone over for a big celebratory dinner afterward! Designing a kitchen myself for a new build and curious about your thoughts on an island sink across from stove vs. Do you prefer a galley such as this or a u-shaped kitchen? Jean actually said that a galley style kitchen is one of the most functional kitchens there is!
Always felt uncomfortable not facing out since so much time is spent at the sink. We had the small seating area in our last kitchen and it became our MOST used space! For morning coffee, for evening wine, for grocery list making, a resting place while cooking….. We so miss it. You will love it!!! So excited to see how yours develops. Sutton seems to be more cool toned but Bromley and Plymouth are warm.
How do you mix cool and warm tones together? Love it! It actually reminds me of my kitchen a bit on a much bigger scale. You will enjoy. I know you have probably thought of everything but I was curious if you thought about putting the ladder rail on the open shelving cabinetry that you see when you walk in your front door.
I picture that with the seating chairs as what you see from your front door. That also keeps your walkway clearance between that other cabinet and the island a little more open without a ladder there. Either way, this is fabulous and I cannot wait to see it unfold. Love this idea. Can the ladder rail be on both sections with a removable ladder? So you could store it on the hutch, but could easily move it over to the other side when needed?
This is absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing the progress. Interested in the clearance between the island and the ladder bottom when installed, seems like it might be tight in comparison. Great work team! Your gonna love that sitting area at the front!
Make the chairs comfy, Paris club chair like. Beautiful plan gang! Look forward to it unfolding. Our favorite beach rental has a pink!
I dream of a house big enough for a kitchen sofa. I looooove all the cabinet colors. The mix is going to be so lovely and cozy. I am curious about a pot filler. Did you eliminate for design or function reasons? That was something we actually added in recently although not pictured here!
We love a pot filler! I always wonder about pot fillers vs pot emptying. We use it for way more than filling a pot vases too! But Chris uses one all the time. He even adds more water while he is cooking often! I just over the weekend drew out my own kitchen design and we have very similar elements! As a kitchen designer I truly appreciate the attention to detail in this kitchen and all the beautiful moments!
Cannot wait to see it come to life! What in the world is a speed oven? And man that hutch is going to be beautiful. I am very excited to see how this unfolds! A speed oven is a microwave, toaster oven, convection oven, warming drawer I think! Supposed to be amazing! Keep you posted. It will be so fun to see it come together and see you all work in it.
This is wonderful. Someone who dedicates their life to designing kitchens — you really get a lot of insight and wisdom drawn from experience. Not surprising, but it looks stunning and functional. I sure hope you have the appliances on order as I was quoted February 9, , for delivery of the Cafe fridge I wanted and I hear that dishwashers are on a month backorder.
Looking forward to seeing the progress! This is gonna be so so good!!! Cannot wait to see it all come together! I happen to love looking at technical drawings, so thanks for sharing! The outlets on either end of the island make me sad though!
Wonder if it would be practical to tuck them away in the open shelf area? Regardless, it will be amazing!! Wow, this is going to be beautiful! We are also designing a kitchen, currently on a much smaller scale!
Talk about the heart of the home. This kitchen is going to be gorgeous. Is that pale-slate blue on my screen going to be a color we see repeated throughout your home? The ladder, the gold railing on the shelves, gahhhhhh! Oh, my heart skipped a few beats when I saw the beverage station and pantry! The sconces, that library rail! The details are the reason to use a designer! I could never be so detailed myself! Ooh, Julia, this is gonna be a good one! Oh my gosh. This is going to be insane. Did I hear you say next year in your stories?
Or is Christmas dinner still a possibility? Either way — it will be SO worth the wait. Wow, good choice going with Stoffer.
There are people good at designing kitchens, like you. Good on you for realizing that and turning over the reins when you now have the budget to do so and plans to stay a good long while. From the two dishwashers to the beverage station to the speed oven, the layout is smart and brimming with functionality.
I especially LOVE the mix of soapstone and marble surfaces, as well as the color palette. At some point Julia, would love a post dedicated to the lighting of the kitchen; e. This is going to be so much fun to follow along! Very exciting for you. The colors are lovely. Will you have the fridge in cabinetry? Love everything!!!! So fun to see!!! I do love a good floor plan. Thanks for sharing! I think Chris will be happy working in this kitchen!
In Sweden it would not be allowed to have a range without a sink on the same side of the kitchen. This is due to risk of spilling, for example, hot water over kids or dogs when turning around to pour water of potatoes or pasta.
But then again, we do love our building rules and regulations over here. Gift Guides! We designed the Charly line of sofas, chairs, and ottomans with perfect proportions for comfort — with wide arms, a loungey depth, and stylish and practical lumbar pillows.
Available in 70 kid-friendly, pet-friendly fabrics, this line was created with families in mind. Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours.
It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home. We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on.
Ingrid stands up to it all. Looking for our favorite things? Browse the CLJ shop. You might need a little help searching, huh? Bathroom Ideas. Easy DIY Projects. Decor Hacks. Look for Less. The Daily Dupe. I LOVE it. No regrets. I have four messy kids and a hubby just as messy. And a huge extended family. No issues. I can always refinish or hone it like it was supposed to be.
There are scratches and some chips around the dishwasher. Every material has issues: my white quartz stains like crazy in my bathrooms! Hate it. And granite can chip and stain too. Nothing is as beautiful as marble…maybe soapstone comes close.
Melanie, I love this feedback so much. We had quartzite in our last kitchen which is SUPPOSED to be the hardest surface ever — but can very easily be confused or passed off as quartzite when it is really dolomite, which is much softer. That said, I loved my counters, but not the scratches and chips when I was told there was no way that would happen. The right-angle edge is surprisingly sharp. Sharp enough that if it catches you just right, you cut your knuckles opening the fridge.
Love following the progress, thank you for sharing! Although I find them extremely beautiful they have been so overdone in the past two years that I have almost become weary of seeing them in design.
This is all so beautiful. We just finished our renovation and our appliances were the slowest part, as well. Hang in there. So beautiful! Rooting you on from South Dakota. And it cooks like a dream!! And everyone who walks into my kitchen gasps and admires her. If anyone is thinking of getting one, DO! But also know the burners are ridiculously powerful and hot!! We actually do have our fridge from the old kitchen and are using that.
Everything looks wonderful!!! I would love a kitchen-renovation edition of Chris Cooks. Oh this is going to be good!!! When did you order the appliances?! We ordered ours in April…still waiting for dishwashers, range, speed over, and refrigeration! The mix of colors together is so exciting. The bar faucet link goes to the sink, to let you know. Thank you for sharing! Love love love everything! This will be the most amazing kitchen!
I love the pendants!! May I ask you such a random minor question? What bulbs do you use for exposed lights like that? Oh the appliance delays! Dishwashers are typically 6 months. I might try and get something from a small local appliance store. Polished nickel!! Polished nickel has warm undertones and chrome has cool—so the nickel will pair really well with brass. We barely eeked out our kitchen reno before the shortages became widespread and I am so grateful!
We went with a mostly white, airy design because that is what this house needs and we love how it turned out, but your kitchen design is absolutely my dream. I cannot wait to see it finished so I can save every single picture for future inspiration!
How about a warming drawer? We absolutely love ours. The speed oven we got doubles as a microwave, triples? It will be right in the island. So nice!
I have never even heard of a speed oven! So cool! I will have to look into this when our oven decides to poop out on us. Both in readability and pattern. Not only does this help you as a client but it shows how much work and skill goes into being a well known and good designers. Love love love! We really love it but ended up doing a soapstone quartz because they told us it is so soft it chips easily and will crack if you set a pan down too hard.
I was not brave enough to try! Our worst marks come from dropping things the occasional, now broken, dish from the upper cabinets. Obsessed with this pendent. Do you mind me asking how long and wide the island is?
Would love to know because of the pendent size etc. Deciding the same thing — size and number of pendants for our island. Oh noooooo! Re: appliances Will you buy some secondhand appliances as placeholders so you can have a functioning kitchen?
Or just keep making do? That sounds terrible. All gorgeous Julia!!! You two are masters at everything!!!! Looking forward as I know everyone is to seeing it all together!!! These colors are stunning I love that moody green!!! I feel your frustration! Good things come to those who wait, am I right? Your plans are pretty spectacular! I can see Chris having his own cooking show in the near future! You should be starting now so the appliances GET there by spring.
We love it more than I thought was possible. Keeping my fingers crossed for your appliances to come sooner rather than later!!! Everything looks amazing. I noticed that the bar sink and bar faucet link are both the bar sink.
The cabinetry and shelves inside the pantry are blue. The pantry light will turn on automatically when they walk in. The light itself is not blue. Julia is all about those just right kelvins! Lead times are a nightmare right now but it will be so worth it. So excited for this! Would it be possible to take a look at the links to the sources? Lots of samples! I love that word and description so much. We love our soapstone so so much.
I also appreciate the one slow long project BC so many are going through the same thing and then faster side projects that are satisfying to complete. I am definitely in it for the long haul. This is THE most beautiful and thought-through kitchen design I have ever seen. I cannot wait to see you and the StofferKitchen team bring this to life!
This is so beautiful I can hardly hear it! Did they ever steer you away from choices you would have made if you were DIY-ing? What did you learn from the process?
We shared a lot about that in this post from a couple months ago. We were able to explain how we like to cook and use the kitchen and they made suggestions that I never even thought about. They were so thoughtful in where every last detail was placed.
Where the silverware should go. Where the cutting boards will be most handy. Where outlets should be. Their expertise is absolutely in the details. It gives us a lot more confidence every penny will be well spent. Gift Guides! We designed the Charly line of sofas, chairs, and ottomans with perfect proportions for comfort — with wide arms, a loungey depth, and stylish and practical lumbar pillows.

Did you know we also have a second blog called Living the Blog. Chris and I both have such a passion for blogging. Living the Blog is where we help other people by showing them what we do and how we do it. It includes lots on info on finding work, Food Styling and Photography, Video Production, income reports a little un-British to talk about our earnings, but we learned so much from reading other peoples income reports , blogging schedules and how our blog grew from day 1.
I had to use minced lamb instead of neck or shoulder - lamb is so expensive here in Alberta and there is a very limited choice of cuts! Lamb mince still worked very well in terms of flavour. We will definitely be having it again soon.
I've enjoyed your YouTube videos for at least a year and finally read the back story of the family and te blog. Congratulations to all of you for what you do!
The reason I'm on line today is to download the curry base and steak sauce recipes. It was definitely a winner. I am going to make "Portuguese Chicken Salad I do have a question about the amount of chicken in these recipes. The "Chipotle Chicken" salad only supported 1 or at most 2 chicken breasts.
