Bacalar is not overloaded with tourists like some other places in Mexico ahem Cancun! You can really take in the scenery without any distractions and get grounded. As I work online, I was able to get some work done in peace and quiet each morning, and I say some other people going for walks, meditating or even practicing yoga by the pier at our hostel.
The early bird certainly gets the worm in Bacalar. You will never want to miss a sunrise with crystal clear waters like these. A great way to explore the lagoon is by kayak. There a plenty of lake-front shops that offer kayak rental services. You could kayak to the black cenote which is rather interesting. The water goes from turquoise to inky black because a limestone tavern collapsed onto itself. This is another reason you need to be up by sunrise! It is a guided paddleboarding trip that lasts about 3 hours and is one of the most fun activities in Bacalar for the adventurous traveller!
Visit sandbars and jump from the remains of a pirate ship into the crystal clear waters! This spot was once notoriously used by pirates to hide out adjoining but smaller Mariscol Lagoon.
Also, the rich mud in pirates channel makes for a great exfoliation treatment. Yes, you can definitely jump off the dock at one of the 4 public docks located in Bacalar that allow you to enjoy the views for free. We did this as part of our boat trip but some places are now starting to charge tourists to Hang out and jump. The tourism booth can point them all out to you! For instance, there is one called the Cenote Esmeralda with a depth of 45 meters.
Some transport options are:. Bacalar village is a charming glimpse at old Mexican life and a great place to unravel the rich history of Quintana Roo.

There are endless opportunities to get wet in some of the clearest waters on this side of the Maldives. Some of the best access to the aqua is found at Balneario Municipal El Aserradero.
There, rickety timber piers poke over the water. The campground at Yaxche in Balacar town, meanwhile, has its own over-water hammocks and swings, not to mention accommodation right by the banks that promises not to break the bank.
Later, Welsh pirate Henry Morgan sailed his ships up it for repairs. These days, the swashbucklers have all but gone. Instead, tourists come to wade through the waist-high waters with a couple of cold cervezas at hand. The mud here is also considered to be packed with rejuvenating minerals, so be sure to get your spa fix before paddling off.
The rooms are well designed and we had a sweet hammock setup on our balcony. This is one of the more luxurious and beautiful hotels in Bacalar, situated right on the lake. It has interesting architecture, kayaks and paddle boards for rent, and an outdoor swimming pool.
This eco-hotel is a magical gem, with overwater bungalows and a private deck with access to the lagoon. The vibe is super intimate with only 11 guest rooms on property and a location situated a bit further from the main downtown. The guest rooms are bungalow style with rustic bohemian decor and the outdoor pool features gorgeous views looking out onto the lagoon.
The amazing food in Bacalar was honestly the biggest surprise of this trip. Everywhere we ate was so, so good. Usually Tulum gets all the hype for having great restaurants, but we honestly felt like we had better meals in Bacalar but for way less. This was our favorite spot in Bacalar by far.
We stumbled upon it after showing up to a recommended Yelp restaurant that was closed. Such a cute open-air spot for a morning pick-me-up. We enjoyed their coffee, french toast and chia pudding. I have mixed feelings about this place, but hear me out. Like beyond. This is a spacious place right in the heart of the town with a lush back patio full of jungle vibes.
We loved their matcha latte, juices and healthy bites! We had an amazing dinner here and enjoyed live music while we ate. I had the ahi tuna and garlic bread which were both delicious. Restaurants specialize in locally-produced ingredients and fully cater to vegetarians and vegans. There are so many great restaurants to choose from but here are three that we think you should try when visiting Bacalar.
This restaurant on Calle 22 — between Avenida 5 and 7 — has tables in charming garden surroundings. The menu is extensive, and wherever possible, all ingredients are sourced locally. The house specials include a vegetarian burger, while eggs are served in a number of different ways. If you simply want a lunchtime snack, go for one of their delicious paninis or salads.
The restaurant also has a shop and art gallery with an emphasis on fair trade products and local crafts. Kai Pez on Calle 20 offers you the chance to soak in the stunning views over the lake as you eat.
Impressive at any time of the day, but sunset is probably the best time of all. The menu includes some mouthwatering fresh fish — available for lunch or dinner. There are a few typical Mexican dishes, with Tacos de Cochinita being the regional specialty, as well as shrimp and tuna which you can enjoy with a salad or as a burger.
Empanadas de Chaya with its gouda cheese is another dish worth a try! Family-friendly El Fogon del Sur can cater to large groups and has a hip outdoor seating area. If you want a hearty meal before setting out for the day, El Fogon del Sur has gained a reputation for a very filling and tasty breakfast. The lake, Laguna de Bacalar, has so much to offer those wishing to swim, sail or try out various watersports. But what makes Laguna Bacalar even more special is the watercolor.
The lagoon of Bacalar is known for its seven shades of blue water. The colors range from pale shades of baby blue to aqua to deep royal blues. Qualified scuba divers will find plenty of spots to explore. With the added bonus of the unique history associated with Bacalar, and the delicious food available, your time in Bacalar is guaranteed to leave you well-refreshed by the end of your vacation.
After a vacation in Bacalar, you may be faced with a tough choice — should you tell anyone else about this magical place or keep it to yourself?! Mexico has a well-developed tourist industry. The added attraction of that part of Yucatan was the Mayan history and the wonderful sites that remained in good condition. The weather in Bacalar has temperatures are around 86 degrees all year round, only falling to 68 degrees at night — so you can soak in the sun all day and sleep like a baby in the cooler evenings.
Between November and May, there are largely cloudless skies and little rainfall, certainly not enough to spoil a trip.
