TikTok video from Seth Huteson guitar. Hey Wanna listen to some tunes? Pixies - doolittle Great album. Can hear the influences they've had on other bands. Can't believe it's the first time I've listened to a Pixie's album. Kinda wish some of the tracks were longer. I really liked this album, to the point where I'm thinking I really should be a bigger Pixies fan than I am. I only know the hits I'll def give this album a few more listens and I've also revisited "Doolittle" which is also a cool album.
First time listening to the full album and really enjoyed it. Sets the scene for what follows. Enjoyed the rawness with nice melodies weaved within. A solid debut. This is clearly the forerunner of everything I loved about 90s grunge, and I should love it. I do like it, I think perhaps I'm biased against it as it has been held up as a shining beacon of innovation that can do no wrong. That one song though might be worth a whole 5 on its own. So good. The first time I listened to the Pixies I was about 13 years old.
The sound guy at a concert I had gone to kept playing Gigantic over and over on the speakers while we were waiting for the band to come out. A couple of days later I got a comp for like 4dls and it was so good that I had to get their albums one by one. Surfer Rosa was the one that caught my attention the most -wouldn't know why- and so it was the first I got.
It holds a very special place in my heart since then. Good album Some solid post-punk music, but I'm not sure I could delve too far into their sound without growing a bit tired of it. Sort of feels like with Radiohead and Creep, where "that one song" clearly doesn't represent the rest of the band's work.
The Pixies' debut album took me by surprise. At first, I was turned off by the strange raunchy vocals, screaming, raw instrumentals and confusing lyrics. I found it hard to follow, to appreciate or to enjoy. Now, after listening to it a couple of times, I don't understand how I could misjudge it so poorly. Rarely have I found a record that combines such raw passion with catchy hooks.
The rest of the record is almost as impressive, though I sometimes have difficulty in enjoying the raunchiest and edgiest tracks Something Against You and River Euphrates, filled with demonic screaming but it's admittedly very hard to compete with the rest of Surfer Rosa. Kinda loud at times. I can't tell if I love it or hate it at times. Wasn't a fan of Bone Machine but after that the album was very solid. Loud grungy vibes, very 90s. Had only really heard Where Is My Mind before.
Lots of energy, frantic guitars, fast loud drums, bet they have some rowdy live shows. A few tracks are a miss. Where Is My Mind was way ahead of its time. A lot more cohesive of a sound than the last Pixies album I got. A great idea of indie punk, and just some raw, primal sound throughout. If I was a rose I wouldn't be surfing, that sounds scary! Very cool album!
Love how raucous, stompy and fun it is - definitely laid the way for lots of bands after them - mad me think lots of Arcade Fire. Feels very foundational and exciting - NICE. This album is destined to remain their great masterpiece, and one of the masterpieces of the entire decade, one of the most influential albums of its time. Almost every song speaks for itself. It's hard to find a common denominator, apart from extreme creativity and the usual light-heartedness.
The songs are songs, but they go against the antithesis of song because they are always blasted by extreme contrasts, sometimes in an erudite way and sometimes in a crazy way.
Excellent album. What a malignant surprise. So, unfortunately, the timing of this album is bittersweet. But no, it's a really great one. I enjoyed this quite a lot. Lays the groundwork for a lot of grunge-y rock that followed, like Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. The interludes of chatter are interesting too.
I saved a lot of songs from this album. Crazy too that this band has the same Frank Black or Black Francis who gave us that teenager album that was not so hot. Album art: Drake the kinda guy to see this cover, have his heart literally beat a foot out of his chest like The Mask, then ask the woman to cover up.
Is that the titular surfer, Rosa? She looks great. I can't help but dig this one. Oh doctor and hello, nurse! I think I've heard the Pixies a time or two but never like this in this list.
Love the garage band sound and the short sweet songs. A 33 minute album is just how I like it. Gigantic was a stand out and so was this album cover. Classic classic classic Pixies. Sexy, dirty, menacing, it has it all. So innovative when it came out and it has aged remarkably well. Love Pixies idiosyncratic style and energy. Love Doolittle, this is a close 2nd. A band that somehow passed me by, listening this has made me want to explore more of their catalogue.
Clearly hugely influential on band like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and half the 90s by the sounds of it. Brilliant stuff.
Heavy-rotation on college radio show, and with good reason. Was essential listening for me that year, but it has been ages since I've had it on start-to-finish. Holds up with amazing energy! Excellent production by Steve Albini, restraining the madness at times and then letting it all loose. Good, but prefer Dolittle! Where is my mind is great. Key Songs: Where is My mind?
This is like surf rock on crack, the guitar is a little dirty for me sometimes but WOW yeah this is what rock should sound like. Songs aren't particularly distinguishable from each other until Where is My Mind?
A few songs had some good pop hooks, one of them was recognisable hit: "Where is my Mind? But the one song which instantly grabbed me was "Tony's Theme", which stood out by it's banging background vocals shouting "To" "ny"! The twisted surreal guitars and up-tempo drumming added to the effect, though in truth it sounded like an homage to the Ramones. Ultimately, the album is worth a listen. A tribute to is genera and era. Obrigado por inspirar o nirvana e nos tirar dos anos Where Is My Mind is solid, but the rest was Es como un punto intermedio entre Sex Pistols y Yeah Yeah Yeahs, pero sin llegar a ser alguno de esos dos estilos.
Best wel fijn album met de bekende plaat where is my mind erop. Bit to rocky for me. Also one song with a guy shouting in the background made me take off my headset.
Damn, I forgot to review this after listening to it and I pretty much forgot what it was like. Not a great sign since that was less than a week ago. Wanted to enjoy this more than I did. Think it probably needs multiple listens for me to get into. Bit shouty for my tastes. Lyrics are a bit mental for me.. I dunno.. Wish this was out of 10!
Yeah, I used to fuck with this one as a teenager. It's been a while. The list already diminished my appreciation of the Pixies just a tiny bit , by exposing me to The Gun Club, who apparently did this sound better and earlier!
I like how the Pixies can be catchy, fun, and even poppy, but still keep the qualities of discordance and noisiness. I guess they are a kind of pivot point where noise rock interesting that Ambini produced this started giving way to "noise pop".
Anyhow, I actually prefer their next album, Doolittle, and I don't think there's any justification for having both of them on this list. Un bien bel ascenseur emotionnel. Listen to the Pixies, first time l have heard them. Even though my grandson in law thinks they are the greatest. The first half up to where is my mind feels more sincere and sad, while the latter part is more just goofing around in the garage. Actually on second listen the entire thing is really goofy, with lots of messing around random yelling, silly spanish, just silly riffs The entire album feels very raw, deliberately unpolished.
Maybe too much so for the vocals and guitar, sometimes becomes a bit grating for my taste. Loving the drum and bass sounds though. The songs kind of blend into eachother, except for the obvious standout of Where is My Mind? It was enjoyable enough to listen through, but I don't think I'll be coming back that often. Likte det. Litt forvirra av all partinga i siste delen. Additional Comments: This album was very unique and give alternative rock a great look.
Personally not much stood out from me from this album, but that does not mean it is a bad album. Overall its pretty neat. I am terrible and forgot to finish it. From what I heard I didn't like the singing voice s very much.
Tiddies were good tho. Not my type of music but isn't a bad album I would give a 3 stars and a half if I could. Interesting album. Not a huge fan of most of the other tracks. The Pixies feel like a band I should be more familiar, and like more than I do.
I never even went through a Nirvana phase. So it's likely they're just not a band for me. Surfer Rosa feels pretty consistent in sound throughout, with "Where is My Mind? Lyrically, I feel like I could give another listen. I picked up on the largely comical feeling of the lyrics, but didn't pick up too many specifics beyond Tony's Theme parodying super here theme songs. Musically you can clearly here the sounds that would influence grunge over the next few years Overall, I think this is an album that would have felt much different when it came out than it does now.
After all, I'm not really comparing it to the hard rock sounds that came before it but rather the grunge and alternative scene that came after. But listening to it now, over 30 years after it came out, it doesn't stick with me.
It's not off-putting in anyway, it just seems to blend in with the music that came after which I just never really got into. Favorite songs: Where is my Mind? Some songs are quite enjoyable, some contain a bit way too much screaming River Euphrates. Where is my mind? Revisit, some decent material. Rated 3 stars because I rated the previous albums slightly too highly. Now I have some perspective….
You know, I hated the opening few songs so much that I never listened to the rest of this album and it gets progressively better as it goes. Better than I ever gave it credit for. Haven't always warmed to this album but on listening again, it's sharp Albini production. Big fan of several Pixies songs including a couple on this album but overall this is kind of hard to listen to.
Sounds a lot like a few friends got together with some instruments and decided to screw around in the garage. This seems pretty uneven, but the raw feral energy of this album is pretty impressive. Certainly Where Is My Mind, Bone Machine and Gigantic stand out, but there is no dismissing the craziness that becomes a bit more organized when they get to doolittle. The song I knew was from "Fight Club". The rest of the album was great, very 'in a dive bar that smells like smoke, drinking beer at a small square table by yourself' kinda vibe.
Sound like early precursors to punk rock. I'd heard Where is my Mind? That sounds like Modest Mouse.
